I have the same issue. The dealer said that the range was low, but because I have window tint, they wouldn't do much more for me. They told me that the tint was the issue. I'm not going to get the tint removed, so I'm just going to deal with it.

.........believe it or not, if you place the fob under your chin while pressing the unlock / lock button, it will increase the range. I guess it has something do do with the electro-magnetic waves produce by the brain. Try it, and if that fails try putting the fob by the temple of your ear.

+1
works with every car remote. Bones act as an antenna (Directional for some people!)

Well, on my e60 04, and 06, i was able to open the car's doors from a long distance. For some reason, the distance has been shortened on the e60 08. (LCII)

I don't have any hard evidence but in my experiences, I've noticed the opposite to be true. My LCI (with comfort access) seems to provide me a larger distance for remote locking/unlocking than my 2004 car...

Rudy, apparently, the remote antenna is embedded in the rear window: any idea if som kind of "aggressive" car wash could have damaged the receptor antenna ?
Thanks for your help !

I don't think an exterior car wash could damge the antenna but something could have scratched the interior of the window where the different antenna elements are painted on the window.

There are many different antennas integrated into the rear window. The antenna that gets the signal from the key fob is located in the top right corner of the glass as you're looking at it from the outside. Keep in mind that comfort access cars have many more antennas to detect where the key is located (inside the car, left or right side of the car, in the trunk, etc.) but I don't think they are used to pickup the remote lock/unlock signal like the one in the window does. It's possible that the signal transmitted by the comfort access fob is stronger (if the battery is good) than the signal produced by the non-CA fobs (with a good battery).

Take a look at the following .pdf to see where the antennas are in the rear window...

Thanks for the hint Rudy! I'll try and check if nothing has been scratched in the inside as I noticed the reduced distance for remote key opening just after my car was washed at BMW service.
I'll try and match the diagram ont the pdf with what I can see !
Thanks again
