Sometimes these threads are like Charlie Sheen... a fricken train wreck you cant turn away from... thanks for the entertainment! I could do without the name calling based on a disagreement but it is pretty funny to me that its always the same people stirring the pot.
Drive it. Enjoy it.

Yes 87 is "acceptable" just as is riding on your donut spare. But it is not recommended. I don't believe any corporate advertising. I believe in the facts and it has nothing to do with BMW, any high performance engine will do better with higher octane gas. When I had a Honda Accord, I used regular. I will not use regular in the 550. "Regular octane is recommended for most cars. However, some cars with high compression engines, like sports cars and certain luxury cars, need mid-grade or premium gasoline to prevent knock."

First, a little background... where I live our winters are cold, like -30c cold, and with my new job I have to park outdoors at work (cue the little viloins for my sob story). Anyway, recently my 550 has been misfiring and idling really rough from time to time and it threw a check engine light (with no explanation in the idrive check control messages). When I picked up my car from servicing and discussed the issue, guess what the recommended solution - direct from BMW Canada - for the misfires was?
Yup, you guessed it... use lower grade gasoline during the winter. So, I guess the moral to my story is that, under certain circumstances, BMW does recommend using lower grade gas. Now to be fair, as soon as the weather starts warming up I will switch back to premium for the (real or percieved) performance improvement, but thought I would see if I could keep the arguments in this thread going for at least another day or two! (It's just that entertaining
