I have driven my car for 16,000 miles and I have had no real I-drive issues, now I don't have nav, sat, HUD
I'm thinking (IMHO) that you really do have a mechanical lemon (not an I-drive lemon) and that just replacing it with a working 5er your problems would be solved. I wouldn't give up on the 5 it is a wonderful car

I've driven a friend's X5, and I could just never give up the handling of my E60 sedan. The X5 is great as SUVs go, but its handling is ordinary. My 545i is just remarkable. I'll get a 5 wagon when they come out if I want more room, because I'm told the wagon handles just about identically with the sedan. Get 545i wagon/Touring and just assume your new iDrive will work fine. Most do.

I don't have many issues about i-Drive that scare me away from i-Drive. The only problems that annoy me are radio static (once in a while) and CD was not resumed back correctly.

If I were you, I'd trade in for MY2005 545i SMG

Stay with E60. Iceman posted a while back that every 20th X5 is stolen. So get 1-19 and you should be okay.
Plus better gas mileage on the E60 and I think the E60 looks better.

As I said I am not to fond of having to deal with iDrive issues..again.? I don't think that this is going to be a quik fix with the iDrive.? Look at the 7 series iDrive...been out for almost 5 years and they STILL have issues.? No, I think if I can get out of that car and away from the iDrive I will stay away from it.? The new 5er E60 is the perfect car...without iDrive.

They are allready working on the new X5 (E70), so the X5 will become an old model very soon.
I would trade it in for a new E60, maybe upgrade it.?

I totally agree and the I Drive that you might be afraid of maybe 150% better than the 04 models.......so this means that the IDrive is 5% fixed

i agree w/both iceman and slvr530i. i've posted a poll few days ago and asked about which suv (need third row seat) to get for my parents. and i've decided to get either a cadillac srx or volvo xc90. not because they are more reliable. just because they came out last year as '04 models and i don't have to worry about changing it again in the next 2-3 yrs. same as the x5. i forgot the current x5 came out '00 or '01 but will definitely change the body style in the next couple yrs. even if you are planning to change it again before that time, not many people are interested to buy a older model from you when the new one is around the corner. trade in value will be lower as well <_<. as far as the '05 530 or 545, i'm sure most of the idrive problems will be gone. it's not fun for bmw to repair all the problems w/o making money and most of us are using their loaners. it's a lose-lose situation for them. worse comes to worst, if your new '05 gives you problems again, you can ask for a '06 model and you'll have free upgrade every year w/o paying !
