if i mistakenly put a gallon of diesel into a petro BMW, would this harm the engine ?
A gallon of diesel will not destroy the gas engine, but fill it up with gasoline at once.
The diesel fuel will kill the catalysator.
Best would be not the start the engine and have the car towed to the dealers,
and have the all the fuel pumped off.
BUT if one puts gasoline into a diesel car DON'T START IT AT ALL.
The whole engine will be destroyed!

How'd that happen? In the states, the nozzle of the gas pump is too large to fit in the hole of the non-diesel gas tank, to prevent such incidents.
But anything is possible...

I had an Audi A6 4.2 that I filled at a Shell station that had accidently pumped diesel fuel into the premium storage tank. I would say I put about 1/2 a tank of diesel into the car (and I would assum that the diesel I put in the car was somewhat diluted by the correct fuel in the storage tank).
I drove my car home (about 3 miles) with the engine running very rough. The next morning the car turned over and then the engine froze. I had it towed and found out it was diesel in the fuel.
I wound up having both catalytic converters replaced as well as the spark plugs (twice), gas filter, and had the tank drained and flushed. I didn't have my car for about 3 weeks.
One gallon might not cause any problems but if it were me, I'd have the tank drained just based on what I went through with my Audi. Better safe than sorry.

Wow..Who wound up paying for the repairs? I bet that station must have had a flood of calls from unhappy customers, likely a lawsuit or two heaped on it..is it still in business?
