Default "Pushing it"

I have a 2008 528i

What do you all consider "pushing it".
RPM wise? 5k 6k?
How often do you "punch it" or Run it around 5-6k?

What about speed wise?

Thanks in advance for all the responses.

The gas pedal wouldn't go to the floor unless it was designed to. And it's a sad day when I don't bounce it off the rev-limiter at least once. That said, the turbo motor is quicker short-shifted. NA motors need to be wrung out to achieve best acceleration.

So RPM wise? I know the v8 is different from the I6, but is hitting 5-6 k ok for it?

Been smashing the peddle happily for 7 years. Have a 195K miles...a truism here - if BMW's engineers didn't stop the revs at 5 to 6, you'll be just fine hitting them. Beyond that there is rapidly diminishing returns on power output - lotta noise, little progression. Autos will shift at their preset rpm limits to prevent damage. And if the tranny just didn't listen, the DME killing the fun will. Enjoy your ride - it's a high-performance driving machine designed for limits most drivers will never see.

A car is moved forward by torque, not horsepower.

This curve for the 550i shows that torque peaks around 3500 RPM. Running the RPM higher will not increase torque output.

Running the RPM higher does have the advantage that as the transmission is shifted to the next gear and RPM drops, the engine is still at a good point in the torque curve.

This graph clearly shows why the BMW V8s are so much fun to drive. 80% of maximum torque is available from 1500 to 6000 RPM. The engine is ready to pull all the time.

My e60 is one of 3 BMW's I have owned. An e30, an e10 (good friend owned it 20 years ago, now I own it, It's my project car, but I drove it back in it's prime before he let it sit parked in the AZ sun for 7 years.) and my current 530i, all of which handled every bit of pedal I ever gave them with a response of "is that all you got?". These cars are made to be driven hard...as long as you keep up with the maintenance! You do know the Autobaugn (spelling?) is in Germany right? If you think you drive your's hard just think what the BMW owners in Germany are doing with no speed limits! Just a thought Have fun, enjoy that "ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE" .
