You can do the adaption reset but you will still have the same issue arise. Once you go into the E60 (F4) menu go to trans module and you should see an option for reset (INPA).

Original owner of a 2004, 530i here with 63000 miles. Had all the issues/problems mentioned by others, first I had the BMW dealer change transmission fluid, that was a very temporary fix, then while driving downhill coming to a stop I got the "dreaded" malfunction/error warning in Idrive. Turned the car off for about 2 minutes with the key OUT of the ignition, was able to drive home ok. The following week took the car back to BMW and was told there's an "error code" for 3-2 down shift and I NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION. A quick history.... I'm the original owner, car is my weekend/leisure/vacation driver serviced by BMW.
Did my research, contacted/complained to ZF, ZF recommended going to a certified ZF shop, took the car, the tech and I road tested the car, right away the tech was able simulate the transmission problem. When the transmission was opened I was contacted with 2 options. Option 1, replace the Mechatronics, (that comes as a kit with various seals etc, this would be a time consuming rebuild with LIMITED guarantee or.... option 2, put in a remanufactured ZF tranny with a better warranty. I chose the remanufactured route, though more costly. The cost, over $4000... The ZF certified shop recommended no aggressive driving for 200 miles, I complied, during that break in period I noticed ROUGH shifts up and down, I thought wtf, but after the first 200 miles no longer experiencing rough up/down shifts.
Btw, ZF recommends changing transmission fluid, filter every 50,000 miles.
