the smell means that the engine burns oil, that is due to a bad turbo that leaks the turbo in to the engine. Get the turbo replaced ASAP or you will mess up your catalazitor and the exhaust sensors....
I've driven diesels all my life so I have the experience.
Or it can be a loose hose from/around the turbo. It is definitely either one - bad turbo or loose turbo hose.
The smell/ sound combo makes it pretty clear.

It can be the exhaust cleaning system.
The first times i notice the sound i was thinking that something was wrong and the strong burn smell was there too.
Now i can easilly notice when the system is working, i notice the strong sound from the exhaust ( almost like tuning exhaust) and the smell it's very strong if i stop the car in that moment.
