i have a 530d turbo and have noticed a slight whizzing or drilling sound when accelarating. the sound is especially bad when the window is down. couples to this i feel as if when accelarating the car is slow to pick up speed.

wondered if any of you guys have had similar experience

You problem could be a variety of things, but my quess is that you have a loose or leaky hose--assuming you have hoses. The "drilling" sound doesn't sound right for a hose problem though.

i would also like to add that there is quite a strong smell coming from the exhaust after i stop the car and exit.

That also doesn't sound like a hose if the "problems" are connected. What does it smell like?

While I've had quite a few turbos, trouble shooting them gets out of my league very quickly. I am best with hoses. I wonder if the turbo is getting adequate lubrication. I'd be heading for my dealer. Good luck.

The whizzling sound from a turbo is normal.

A turbo is like a hairdrier, it blows air in to the manifold.

The speed of the small wings inside the turbo is incredible!

Some turbos hit 120000 to 150000rpm.

I had the feeling he was talking about a newly heard noise, but I am not sure. "Drilling" doesn't sound normal either. And, I have never heard any sort of mechanical noise from an automobile turbo--just the merry sound of air moving or escaping.
