No, it won't do it in position II with engine running - not on a 2004 E61 anyway. It just comes up with a warning triangle then goes back to the normal display.

I agree, there could be lots of people driving around with faulty thermostats and you'd never know. No way for a dealer to check during a normal service either.
Maybe that might explain why some people are getting poor fuel consumption despite dealers analysing the car and saying there's nothing wrong!

(My thanks to smarty156 for his original instructions).
Eddie - I just copied the original instructions from this forum. Thank the original poster, not me!

It really does work in pos II. I used it many tomes like this.
Just keep the button pushed after the warning triangle appears, it takes a
Bit longer but it will work.

It works on my 2004 E61 530DAT... just press the button longer and after it goes back to the normal display and the menu appears. My cars engine temperature is between 60 and 67 C and the car is cold to drive in Norway in - 25 C. I have ordered a EGR thermostat...

Thanks mini_me. Great work !

OT:

If we were to fit an aux water temp gauge were would you place the sensor for an accurate reading ? I'm considering setting one up in the engine bay in an non permanent guise.

Personally I would mount it in the coolant circuit, right after the coolant exits the engine block. This way you would have a reading either way; engine using the short or the long cooling circuit.

Still doesn't appear, no matter how long I hold it. Do you have to be stationary?

Nope, I can enter the menu even driving on the highway (not that I would do that Officer.... ).
It does however take some seconds after you see the warning triangle. (ps mine's a 2004 E61)

Mini_me - have you noticed any improvement in your mpg or is it too early to tell?
