Mini_me - have you noticed any improvement in your mpg or is it too early to tell?

Sorry to reopen an old subject, but, I checked my engine coolant temp at the weekend and the highest it went after a 20 mile (40 minute) drive was 80c but it fluxuated between 78-80. Does this sound like the egr stat needs changed?

Oh, and the car is a 2004 525D SE.

Thanks,

Bob.

It is 3 days old bob, so np on posting here...

In my case with ambient temp of 5C the engine would not go beyond 70C. When increasing the speed, thus increasing the airflow the temp would drop. These are the symptoms I noticed.

If your car won't go beyond 80C it at least is something you should pay attention to as the normal operating temp is 90C.

You canalways take out the thermostat and check if it closes ok by trying to blow air through it.

I should have mentioned that my fuel economy is pretty dire also, I am between 22 and 25mpg half 30 and half 60mph zones to work. i will take a look at the stat this weekend or I may just get a new one anyway. Next step from here might be a remap to see if that improves things.

Checked mine at the weekend and it did get to just over 90 but on the open road it was mid 80's.

I'm getting 42mpg on average so guess its running ok. Thats actual MPG (UK) ignoring the OBC reading

23 ish sounds poor to me. (without knowing the details of driving style etc.)

The EGR therm. is a cheap part and easy to install so it might give you peace of mind knowing that you can rule at this part as being a possible cause
for temp and mpg problems.

And a remap if purely for MPG sounds wrong to me as BMW themselves are doing everything possible to get good MPG from the car. This means that poor MPG ratings
have a cause. It is this cause that you will have to find and solve. In other words, fight the cause not the symptoms... IMHO

FYI, the dealer diagnosed a leaking hose between turbo and intercooler. After installaing a new one and with the new EGR therm already installed
fuel consumption seems to have improved.

This morning I actually made 39 UK mpg for the trip. (10% city, 90% highway though).

I second that. Make sure the car is running as it should before remapping. I have had 3 BMW diesels remapped and can confirm that it improved the MPG as long as you drive it for economy that is. I wouldn't do it if the improved MPG is your sole reason for it as it will take a long time to recoup the costs LOL!
