You can calibrate the OBC readout. look for the post "Fuel consumption calibration"

Thought I heard someone mention it in another thread, glad I wasn't being old and senile

Just to add my car to the list,
Checked the coolant temp. and it never went above 80degC.
Removed the EGR thermostat and no suprise it was jammed in the open position.
Got one on order, lets hope it does the trick.

How cheap is cheap ?? anyone fancy posting a DIY guide on this please ? or a DIY on how to check your own ??
I have the temp ticks on my Rev counter and it only goes as high as 4600rpm it seems, anyone got a pic of their Rev counter who has done this EGR thermostat fix so I can compare please ?

I don't use the revcounter as the 'hidden' OBD menu is much better for monitoring engine temp.

They had fitted the new thermostat and done some other warranty work, the car had a very slight oil leak and this was traced to a seal on the inlet manifold so they fitted a complete new inlet manifold!
I drove it home the 16 miles from cold - WOW - average for the journey 41.5mpg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on mixed roads driven normally
Previously this journey would achieve 28-29 mpg even from a warm engine
Within 5 miles the car was showing 91c and mainatained it, I can't believe the difference

We were all set to sell the car but this may just change things
I will be posting info re thermostst changes on every E60 forum I can as I know loads of people suffer unsolvable poor mpg

Thanks for posting your result Stephen my car is a 525D which gives me around 25mpg, i have changed the egr stat which was broken. My dealer has quoted me ?380 for changing the main stat but this is way too high.
I have just realised something though, I have a Scotsure warranty and it says that the Thermostat is covered. I am going to pick this up with the dealer on monday to see if they can do it under this warranty. I actually forgot i had this warranty.
Thanks again for the post.
