Hmmm.. I got into this thing a bit on weekend and checked that my temps got up to 80-83 Celsius degrees in 20 minutes. The weather was -8C and my average consumption is currently 7,2 l/100km with average speed of 55km/h. How's that?
Should get higher temps? EGR thermostat or main thermostat?

I recently replaced my EGR thermostat, i did notice that with the old one it was stuck in the open position as I could blow air through it with no resistance. Previously my temp was around the 76 mark but now it is between 80-81 sometimes 83. I recon my main stat might need changed but i am not 100% sure, i am still aiming to get the temp up to 90. You could take off the egr stat and check it before buying one but to be honest they are not expensive. My consumption on my 525d is 25mpg mostly stop and go driving, and an occasional heavy right foot .

Just had a thought, you could change the main stat and do a write up. If it is half as good as you flap removal write up then we'll all be sorted , seriously though your flaps write up was spot on.

I got both changed. From 63 to 80ish with EGR thermostat and from 80ish to 90-91 with main thermostat change. E61 530DAT.

Fuel consumption seem to have dropped about .5 litres/100km , but still at 10.3l/100km with 45km/h average speed.

Gonna try cleaning MAF next. All filters and oil has been changed just 500km ago.

Just take it off and try to blow through it m8! It's a 15 min. job using my writeup and the start of this post.

Your fuel cons. look fine though.

I'm reaching 83-85 celcius pretty fast in 2 degree weather, and the fuel comsumption rocks (just did 700 km's in the weekend, 5 people, 128 km/h in average speed and 6,5 l/100 km's), so I'm not changing mine.

Would someone please do a "how to" on changing the main thermostat?

Looks like it would be much appreciated by a number of people (me included!).

The dealer wants ?381 inc vat to replace mine, no chance. I guess I'll wait till i am off for a week and try to figure it out.

Please someone write up a how to for this, the dealer makes enough on parts out of us....

Anyone?
Changed the main thermostat a few weeks ago and 88 Celcius was printed on both the old and new thermostat. This is the opening temperature. Below its closed. I`m reaching temperature 91 C after aprox 15 min driving. With only EGR changed I reached around 80-83 C.

If my english was better and if I had time I could explain how to change the main thermostat. I wasn`t easy. It took me 4 hours and I had to remove the EGR exhaust cooler and two air ducts to get to the thermostat, and refill aprox 4 liters glycol. It`s not much space to work with the thermostat and difficult to loosen the coolant hoses from the thermostat. But it`s not impossible.

A kid could change the EGR thermostat! Its plain easy compared to changing the main thermostat

That's exactly my problem. Changed EGR stat and now get 83C.
I guess one question to ask, would it really make much difference only going to 83 instead of 90? Doesn't seem like much difference but who knows?
I could get mine changed under warranty and just pay ?100 excess IF I can get a dealer to agree it's a problem. Trouble is, when I asked what the normal engine operating temperature was at the dealer they didn't know and also asked how I could possibly know what temp the engine was getting to when the car doesn't have a temperature gauge! Maybe I'll try again if it's a difficult DIY job.
