Hmmm.. I got into this thing a bit on weekend and checked that my temps got up to 80-83 Celsius degrees in 20 minutes. The weather was -8C and my average consumption is currently 7,2 l/100km with average speed of 55km/h. How's that?
Should get higher temps? EGR thermostat or main thermostat?

Just had a thought, you could change the main stat and do a write up. If it is half as good as you flap removal write up then we'll all be sorted

I got both changed. From 63 to 80ish with EGR thermostat and from 80ish to 90-91 with main thermostat change. E61 530DAT.
Fuel consumption seem to have dropped about .5 litres/100km , but still at 10.3l/100km with 45km/h average speed.
Gonna try cleaning MAF next. All filters and oil has been changed just 500km ago.

I'm reaching 83-85 celcius pretty fast in 2 degree weather, and the fuel comsumption rocks (just did 700 km's in the weekend, 5 people, 128 km/h in average speed and 6,5 l/100 km's), so I'm not changing mine.

Would someone please do a "how to" on changing the main thermostat?
Looks like it would be much appreciated by a number of people (me included!).

Anyone?
If my english was better and if I had time I could explain how to change the main thermostat. I wasn`t easy. It took me 4 hours and I had to remove the EGR exhaust cooler and two air ducts to get to the thermostat, and refill aprox 4 liters glycol. It`s not much space to work with the thermostat and difficult to loosen the coolant hoses from the thermostat. But it`s not impossible.
A kid could change the EGR thermostat! Its plain easy compared to changing the main thermostat

Changed the main thermostat a few weeks ago and 88 Celcius was printed on both the old and new thermostat. This is the opening temperature. Below its closed. I`m reaching temperature 91 C after aprox 15 min driving. With only EGR changed I reached around 80-83 C.

I guess one question to ask, would it really make much difference only going to 83 instead of 90? Doesn't seem like much difference but who knows?
I could get mine changed under warranty and just pay ?100 excess IF I can get a dealer to agree it's a problem. Trouble is, when I asked what the normal engine operating temperature was at the dealer they didn't know and also asked how I could possibly know what temp the engine was getting to when the car doesn't have a temperature gauge! Maybe I'll try again if it's a difficult DIY job.
