Problem with Nav system
Screen on the Nav on 2008 528xi just shows BMW and then goes blank. Restart car or put in key, same thing. Bring it to dealer and they have there hand out for over $1300. Dealer didn't say exactly what had to be replaced or repaired. Not happy I call BMW NA and they tell me they'll research and get back to me, and indicate it will take 3 - 5 days. I check in with them in 3 days and they tell me a decision hasn't been made. Miss a call on day 5, but call back and get told that rep who is reviewing my case was tied up. Gal on phone reads file and tells me we're out of luck. Ask why - "car is too old" and then I'm told and Preowned warranty won't cover it. Ask why they took 5 days to blow smoke and no good answer. Ask to have original gal working case to call back, and she proceeds to tell me that she won't be able to change it. I have read a whole bunch of posts indicating this iDrive Nav system has been very unfaithful to its owners. I even asked if they could at least give me a discount in replacement and she said the case is already closed and I have absolutely no recourse. Not happy, to say the least.

Is there a way to purchase just the HD with the software installed? Is this typically the problem when system will not boot properly? Similar to a PC if the HD is "fragged"?
Thanks

Sounds typical. I have read a few threads regarding this and there doesn't seem to be any definite signs. 2008 you should have a CCC unit which is not hard drive based. You can try a used one, then there is remanufactured but they don't make new replacements any longer. I have seen ads in the forums for ones for sale.

Find an independent shop and ask them to reprogram the CCC, if it doesn't work then your only option is to have it replaced. If dealer replaces it, it will cost you a lot. You can find it on ebay for $4- 500 and have it replaced yourself but you will lose voice command capability. The dealer will only replace with their remanufactured parts which will cost you an arm and a leg.

How far are you out of warranty? Whats the mileage on your car? Do you have the COP that carries/d you out past the original warranty?
The car is still under the Preowned warranty, but they say the Nav doesn't fall under "electrical". It also has a non-working USB in the center console and they won't take care of that. Mileage is 76000.
Have a call in to local dealer with hopes that I might get some sympathy from them. if not, is there an after market radio that can slide in, in place of the CCC and the two disk front end? friend really could get by with using cell phone nav, but to need to spend $1300 just to be able to listen to music is not an acceptable solution.
