I think it has to do with the humidity. t only happens if it is humid (~ above 60% rel. hum. or so)

Maybe BMW should not do their hot testing in death valley, but in DE over the summer.

There is a fix for freezing of the air con condensors, they were orignally set to cool the air to 1.5C, in humid hot conditions with the A/C running hard this causes ice to form and performance of the A/C goes off.

The fix sets the air to be cooled to 2.4C at which temp the A/C does not ice up.

And here is another related bulletin

SI B 64 02 06
Heating and Air Conditioning June 2006
Technical Service

This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. B64 02 06 dated May 2006.

designates changes to this revision

SUBJECT
Water Droplets are Blown from Center Vents with A/C On

MODEL
E60, E61 (5 Series)

E63, E64 (6 Series)

Vehicles produced from October 2, 2005 to December 29, 2005

SITUATION
The customer states when using the air conditioning system on medium to high speed blower, water droplets are blown from the cent vents.

CAUSE

Evaporator drain on housing blocked (manufacturing error, only vehicles produced from October 2, 2005 to December 29, 2005).

Evaporator ices up after a long drive.

Excessive vacuum within the evaporator housing on high blower speed, prevents condensation from draining properly. Caused by faulty drain hose flap.

PROCEDURE

Remove the 2 front side covers of the center console.

Disconnect both evaporator drain hoses at the evaporator housing.

Inspect the drain elbow on the evaporator housing for blockage (a thin plastic membrane will block the drain passage). The depth of the drain port in the elbow is approximately 45 - 50 mm. With a blocked drain the depth of the port is only 20 - 30 mm

If the evaporator drain passage is blocked, use a drill bit (diameter of opening approximately 10 mm) and drill both drain passages out. Clean all plastic shavings from the housing.

If the evaporator drain passage is not blocked, check both evaporator drain hoses for flow by pouring water in each hose. Water should immediately exit from each hose end.

If the evaporator drain passages on the housing are good, refer to SI B64 04 05 for information about possible evaporator icing up which can cause excessive moisture in the air conditioning housing.

Replace both evaporator drain hoses if other measures performed did not repair the vehicle.

If the previous steps do not repair the vehicle, submit a PuMA case to the Electrics Group for further assistance.

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

My dealer says "Could not replicate." Maybe I'll tell them about the TSB. Thanks.

Thanks KAF, I think that SIB would solve my issue. Added onto the list. I'm up to 7 items already, maybe I should schedule my service visit?

Yes I thought about that however in my iDrive there's only one setting, I assume it applies it both sides. The passenger side can only adjust the middle and bottom vent air flow rate while the driver side can adjust top, middle, and bottom vent air flow along with that red/blue bar setting. I have that set on one blue bar with the flow rates the same on both sides and all the vents open fully physically. I believe also when you hit MAX it overrides all the iDrive settings. I'm stumped.

You should have the red/blue thing all the way blue in summer. This will make the air coming out of the top vents noticeably cooler. (this is the same adjustment you used to make in the middle of the two center vents on older BMW's)

I'm with BMW of North America, LLC. I've passed this message on to a BMW NA Customer Relations Representative who will be in touch with you soon.

Well, it happened to me again lasty Friday (the first hot/humid day here).
I drove ~ 20 min and the AC blower started to go faster ansd faster, but not cold air.
Shut down the entire system for 10 min, suffered, and it worked again. The ice must have melted.

Wow you dug up my old thread! I've actually not had this problem since the dealer fixed it. In my case they recharged the A/C system and since then it's colder than ever.

I had a problem with my A/C on a hot, humid Atlanta day. Started my car up after it sat at an airport parking lot for 3 days and only hot air came out. The temperature control was set for auto. Trying it in manual didn't do any good. Turned the car off, let it sit for about 5 minutes and re-started and the a/c system worked normally.

My SA said there have been problems with the a/c that were addressed in v. 25.0. I had my car re-programmed recently for this and a few other software related gremlins and no problems since.
