Not to mention the visual of the BMW owners as preppy 28 yr olds with their lavendar Lacoste shirts w/collars turned up and tennis sweaters over their shoulders. I don't think I have met one BMW owner that fits that mold.

True - its not a BMW

But when a G8 outruns your BMW, are you going to take solace in the fact that your car still has ARS, DSC, SMG, and any other BMW type acronym for a system the G8 doesn't have?

Or are you going to be truly satisfied that the extra 10-20k you paid for a slower car was money well spent.

If you are truly satisfied - then more power to ya.

Face it guys, GM is gaining ground on the performance gap. And they are doing it for the masses.

I disagree with all of you idiots and am running to my local Pontiac dealer to buy one TODAY. Great car and I bet that it's reliable and really well built, too. See you guys on the www.g8.org site which I will be founding soon. Rudy, are you with me??

It looks like a great car and I've rented a few Pontiacs. They're Sporty and fun to drive.
That said, I still wouldn't buy one. The 0-60 the leg room and the horsepower are not the final factors.
Its not what the car has, its also how its delivered. Its like when PC people start telling me why a PC is better than a Mac.
The most basic answer is that the environment I spend my time in (eg. Mac/BMW) has to be one that I enjoy being in and that is made with care and attention to detail, design, functionality and ergonomics. Thats the one thing American car makers have never been able to grasp.
Just bigger and faster is not always better. Its daily life, not an oval race track.

Ummm, no.

Clearly, Pontiac will sell a ton of these and the buyers will all sleep well at night because they didn't "waste their money" on an overpriced 5 series. To them, their car is "just as good as a BMW" but was less expensive. In my opinion, it's a lot like the typical Lexus buyer -- they see value in the savings off of sticker but they don't see (or choose not to see) the big picture "package" that the higher priced German cars offer.

There will always be faster cars than what BMW is building but time after time, BMW still builds some of the best overall cars when you factor in handling, technology, fit and finish, etc. Sure, GM and others keep catching up but BMW and others keep raising the bar...

After reading this, I get the image of John Belushi in "Animal House" trying to rally the troops "Allright, who's with me?" running out, ALL ALONE!!

I remember when I was in high school they had television ads comparing the AMC Matador to a Mercedes. Same thing really.

In a few years let's see where the Pontiac brand will go. GM has too many things on the plate. Cadillac is the real competitor and seems to be quite focused on its mission.

There are plenty of fast muscle cars out there. If the gas price keeps the current pace, you know how those fast and mid price cars will do.
