Ease up guys, you can't tell how much oil has leaked from his car from the photo... WTF???

If you look closely, you'll see there is a trail of oil (a wide trail) about 20 - 30 feet behind his car, as well as under it.

On another note- I'm glad you and your fam weren't injured. On a freeway is not teh place to have a sudden and terminal engine malfunction, especially at rush hour.

Sadly, this is the same engine I have in my car... There went my confidence that the BMW 2.5L, after so many years of building it, was as reliable as a sun dial... We got ours from Carmax, and we got the Maxcare package, so for the next 3 years and 36K miles, if the engine or anything blows, we have a $50.00 (USD) deductible, and Carmax pays the rest... $75 if we take it to BMW and let them do the repair.

Thank God! With engines and labr costing as much as it does with BMW- thank God we went ahead and spent the 2K on the warranty.

Yes connecting rod broke, then it broke the engine block and everything around while it was turning, then rod broke apart and the broken part entered/wedged between the impulse wheel and crankshaft bearing, causing further damage to the near by gearbox casing via the starter casing that bolts onto it. Situation sucks....

Trouble with 3rd party supplied engines is that you never know thier full history.

When something similar happened to a mazda I owned some years ago I got a replacement engine, then sold the thing as soon as I could.

M54 engines are the most reliable engines to date. Can do 300K miles without problems. Camshafts condition and compression measurement is easy way to check. Also a 3month warranty is available, if something's wrong with it you will discover from the day1
