geez, how many miles did your car have? Was it regularly maintained? This is a very good reason why everyone should get extended warranties.

I wouldn't be so fast on the trigger. You could try contacting BMW directly and try to find out how they feel about this type of failure on one of their high end cars. You might be able to get them to chip in for parts while you take care of the labor or maybe split the cost 50/50. I don't think this is an every day occurrence and it could be a defective part in your particular car.

Glad to hear that your family's fine. Keep us posted. G/L

I agree with 911targa...my brothers M5 engine blew roughly 5 months ago and our dealership did not want to pay a single dime..after 2 1/2 months of fighting we came to agreement to split the costs 3 way..my brother, the dealership, and BMW..we ended up paying $9500 of the $27000~ that was estimated by the dealership..im sure that you can get full payment on the replacement of your engine just give them a fight and you will be satisfied..good luck to you hope everything works out

let me add, check your insurance policy. i dunno about the UK, but here in the states my car policy covers ALL mechanical breakdowns, including engine, tranny, and even a/c and all electrical. so check with your insurance if bmw doesnt help.
good luck and keep us posted.

So an update...

Option 1
BMW customer relations say they do sometimes make contribution towards repairs if an authorised dealer considers the failure to be a mechanical fault which is down to a manufacturing error or faulty part. The cost of towing to the Authorised dealer and investigation would be charged in full to make an assessment. The amout BMW contribute towards the repair or replace (if anything) is based on
-Mileage
-Age
-Service History and Purchase history.
Mine is a 2004 with 60k which isn't brand new and I bought it privately which makes if quite unlikely that they would contribute.
What is the cost of a replacement engine from BMW??7500 for a new engine, ?4300* for a recon engine. *Surcharges apply if your engine in not servicable (which mine is not). This doesn't make economical sense for the value of the vehicle - especially if you add on the cost of the fitting. Option 1 is not an option!

Option 2 - Reconned engine.
So I've been calling round all the local engine reconners and they all have impressive warranty and cheap sounding deals ?1800 - ?2000 but they are all reliant of having a servicable unit. If the engine you bring in has a broken con rod add ?200, broken crank - add ?300. So what the total going to cost? You can't tell until you pay to have your car towed in to them and they strip it down, by which time you've already spent ?300. The engine you receive might have an engine number or it may be have been ground off. Add to that the fact that lots of them came over like wheeler dealer wide boys - option 2 out.

Option 3 - Replacement engine from a written off car.
There are not many engines around but I've tracked down a decent sounding engine supplier who has an engine in stock with the spec and same vanos? as mine He will supply and fit for ?1780. Engine has 22k miles with a real engine number which I can notify the DVLA of and not feel too shady. Option 3 seems to be the one to go for so I'm going to get the process started tomorrow.

I'll keep you posted on the progress... I miss my car so much. The corsa I'm renting at the moment is just nasty.

option 3 sounds like your best bet.
i'd still like to know what failed. did the connecting rod bearing wear out? or did the rod just crack? or maybe the rod bolts cracked....

usually this type of failure doesnt occur, unless maintenance was neglected, or engine was raced a lot, or defect from factory.
