I recently purchased a 2006 530i fully loaded. It has the single CD in the dash and the 6 disc changer in the glove box. When I put a burned CD in the single slot it won't play, but when I put that same CD in the changer it plays just fine. Regular CDs play just fine in the single player. Is this a limitation of the in dash player or is there a different way to burn CDs so that it will recognize and play them?

No limitation that I know of mine plays burned cds fine(both mp3 and cd). I always burn on a slow speed though to try and get the best burn I can.

Take this to the dealer, they should be able to activate MP3s.

I have a 04 545i with single CD in the dash and does not play MP3. I asked the dealer they told me it does not support MP3. The car is 3/19/2004 build for Canadian market. Is this true?

Hmm, so some different responses. I will try to burn another CD (on slow) and see if that does anything. I thought it was interesting that the changer played the CD just fine while the in dash wouldn't work. Thanks for the replies and I'll keep testing.

Mi 530i was built a few weeks before yours. No problem getting MP3 support retrofitted. Had that done at least two years ago. Note installed accessories. That may make a difference.

You can PM me for details on the dealer, etc.

Cheers

I do know there is a difference in MP3 retrofit capability, depending on whether you have the nav installed. Unfortunately I can't answer to specifics but I believe any late '04 or early '05 with Nav can be retrofitted for MP3 ability. That is for the single disk. I don't think the changer can play MP3s. To switch the changer to an iPod adapter, you need the MP3 retrofit as well.

For regular CDs it probably does depend on the burning software and whether its a clone of an off the shelf CD or a compilation. I've never had an issue simply making copies but I have had a few compilation CDs that had issues. I don't recall specifics.
