Picked Up a New 550i
Richard - congrats and welcome to the E60
FYI, met you at the BMW F1 event in Indy the first year they did it - I went straight from the E39 M5 to a 545i and have loved every minute of the almost 3 years. I would be interested to know how the 550 compares to the E39 M5.
Wishing you many happy miles

Congratulations Richard. Sounds fantastic. I would be jealous but I pick up my new 550 Sport next month. All the best luck with the car.

There's no question the 550i is tighter and quieter than the M5 (but it had 75k miles when traded). The 550i 4.8 V8 is a great motor, quiet, strong, and sweet sounding gurgle in the 550i (better sounding than the 650i) but it doesn't quite compare to the M5 V8. Handling, I'd have to give the nod to the 550i over a stock E39 M5. The active roll stabilization keeps the 550i flat and with less understeer. I'll likely try the 550i on track once it has a few miles. The 650i handling allowed it to match the M5's lap times at Carolina Motorsport Park despite being slower on the straights. The 550i is probably a hair slower yet but might make up for it with the paddle shifters (I never could heal&toe downshift). The 550i is way ahead technology wise (not all of it an improvement though) and I am getting used to the Bangled styling of the E60 but still marvel at every E39 M5 I see.

Me too. I still LOVE the E39 M5 sooooooooo much.
Haha OH and I should say... I thought your name was very very familiar... I just realized today I probably recognized your handle from bmwm5.com since 2001.
