the only compare i can make is of the old engined 530i and both the old and new engine 530d and all are excellent cars... i would really take the diesel for its economy though!

the 218bhp 3.0d is compltelely different to the 231bhp unit. I have written A LOT on the two so search for some of my threads.

but obviously high revs and the 3.0l really makes your heart sing

Yes the 535d does seem a bit more refined than the 218hp 530d having experienced both. 530d still excellent car.
Tuning the 530d does transform it's behaviour. Must more like the 535d, in terms of torque delivery. No longer i it dead <2000 RPM, and also happy to be >4500. Not that I really need to go that high. But the torque from idle is really great.

One thing i can tell you guys, i'm happy with my 530d.

The sound when warm it's not so bad but of course much different from a BMW 6 in line unleaded fuel ( is still miss the sound of the 635 CSi).

It will be much different too comparing a 6 in line with a V8...

One thing i can tell, around here it's impossible to pay for a 530i about 75.000 EUR and spend 12/13 liters of fuel for each 100 kms you run... in my 530d usually the fuel consumption is around 8/9 liters-100 kms driving fast ... and most of the roads are secondary ones .... torque ... torque ...

After this one maybe a new 530d or a 535d ....

It all depends on what floats your boat.

I've come from a 550+BHP modified Audi RS6 & that's a gas guzzling (boy did it drink) 4.2litre V8 with 2 Turbos & that did sound sweet, but due to having a full sports exhaust (downpipes, cats & cat-back) it was far noiser than my current E60 535D M-Sport.

To demonstrate, we live on a quiet close with just 3 houses & in the Audi, my wife could hear me coming from close on a mile away, in the Bimmer she did not even here me pull up behind the house.

My reasons for not opting for a 540 or 550, were 3 fold. Firstly i wanted to save on my vehicle running costs, so a diesel made perfect sense, second the 540 & 550 in the UK have awful residuals & would be worth less in 2 years than my 535D even with a higher initial purchase price & thirdly with a little DMS magic, i've now got 335BHP more than 500lbsft torque & can hit 60MPH in 5.5 secs, which aint too shabby in a diesel plus get high 30's to the gallon when cruising.

The decision was a no brianer for me. TBH i do love the sound of V8's & with sports exhausts they sound awesome, but i'd bever buy a car based on just how it sounded.

I can understand people who like inline six. Sound is ... perfect! But unlike M5, with diesel 70L tank gieves about 1000km radius and I don?t have to mind so much about speed!

One likes mother other daughter!
