My car is over 50k and is not under warranty anymore so my question is do I need to pay for this? I mean this is safety feature and by law it should be fixed for free isn't it? please help. thanks.

HUmmm you should call BMW NA and ask... or check with a few dealers... I know for my previous MINI the airbag system had a separate longer warranty... Not sure what BMWs are... but I would assume they're similar... so if thats the case the restraint system might have a longer warranty period.

If it's not covered by warranty then what is the cheapest solution for this? I'm in Orange County California, is there a good BMW repair shop around here? thanks for all the help.

When it comes to restraint system, looking for "cheapest solution" isn't really the best solution. A BMW is not a cheap car, and you need to be prepared for high repair bills when things go wrong.

Ya for restraint systems I would go back to the dealer... if its body work you can get by, by going to a good reputable body shop that does BMW cars. Like Spectrum Collision Center...

Have a question pertaining to this: Is the front passenger airbag supposed to be de-activated when there is not a front passenger present? In particular, should a yellow warning light be enabled in the overhead console when the front passenger is absent?
