Here's a similar angled shot of another black car but this one is saphire black, for comparison.

Overall, the paint job on my new 550 is OK ... but it seems like the quality of BMW paint jobs is not what is was even 5 years ago. As others have mentioned here, the clear coat seems a bit soft and is very susceptible to chips & scratches.

My Jet Black car - now with 10 coats of Zaino - looks rich and deep. But it does have an orange peel-like quality to it. Is it just my car ... or does yours have a similar look to the surface?
No orange peel on my silver gray.

Yes, well, be thankful you don't live in Chicago ... winters here with snow and slush and salt can be brutal on a car ... and there are not many opportunities to wash it as much during winter either. So I'm trying to get as much protection on as possible.

This orange peel issue doesn't really bother me too much ... that one photo just happened to catch the light just right to show it at the extreme. I just wanted to know if this is typical enough of most BMWs these days, and based on what BlueRocket said, and what ECFan shows, this looks like the norm.

Gee, I feel better already.

Around 2000, US regulations have made all car manufacturers switch to water-based paint to protect the environment. This has lead to the "lesser" quality paint on newer cars but I think things will improve as better technology improves on the paint processes.

I noticed this effect also, with my current E60 more so than with my previous metallic black '00 E39,i think it is more pronounced on jet black color, it might also have something to do with different painting process.

I used to live in Canada with a jet black E46, I wax it twice a year, once afte the snow and once before the snow and the paint job is smooth as glass. Goes into the auto car wash no problem (touchless of course). Waxing it too much will rub off some of the clear coat you have on your car which give it some orange peel effect. The thing is give it a nice clean hand wash before waxing, anything overdose will kill you.
