When I picked up my new car two weeks ago, my dealer (Autohaus Schaal) said I need to bring the car in for an oil service when I've driven it 1200 miles. I thought the car does not need an oil change until 15,000 miles. Anybody here do the same? I don't mind having it done but these German BMW service companies charge $20 for one liter of oil and I think my car needs five. Maybe I can bring my own oil that I can get for 5 bucks a quart.

I'd definitely go for Castrol, "approved" by BMW, although you can pretty much get the same oil at much lower prices in other stores.
It's reasonable to change the oil after the break in-period, as metal residue and grease etc. most likely has been "captured" in the oil. This is a very cheap investment in the future of your engine. We had the same thing done on our car after the break in-period.

However, I am anil when it comes to oil and actually changed my at 1250 miles - I like to get the first oil out of there. Like posted, it is a cheap investment.
In the US, BMW has full maintenance for 50k miles, which it sounds like you do not have. However, we probably pay more for the initial investment.

I always have oil/filter changed after break in. Had mine done at 3,000 miles. I also have them changed at half the recommended interval. Cheap insurance.

With today's superior machining operations, improved filtration systems and synthetic oil, however, many mechanics feel that is NOT necessary and only serves to fatten the Dealer's wallet. Some have also indicated that various manufacturers use special additives to improve the break-in process, which disappear at the first oil change.
Having said all that, some feel more comfortable with frequent oil changes and for them it is worth it for their peace of mind. Personally, I will have the oil changed per the factory recommendations.... if it's good enough for BMW, it's good enough for me!
