Default Oil Life

I bought a CPO 2009 528i xDrive back in July with 36,xxx miles on it. I drive it mostly to work so it's all highway miles and I just hit 41,xxx. I started wondering if it's time for an oil change so I started paying attention to the Engine Oil indicator in the Service Info menu of iDrive. For the past two weeks it's been fixed at 9000 mls. I would have expected the oil life indicator to decrease as I drive the car every day. The same for front and rear brake pads. Is this normal? Should I just take it to the dealer for service anyway? The service menu does say my Brake Fluid is due in 10/2012 although I have not seen any alerts yet so I may have to take it in soon anyways.

Appreciate any pointers, thanks.

oil life indicator decrements in 1000's (or 500's), I think.
Next, you will see 8000.

Thanks for the reply.

Do the brake pad indicators also decrement in 1000s?

The oil life indicator begins counting down from 15,000 mi. You've put 41,xxx - 36,xxx = 5000 miles on it, so the indication of 9,000 miles left is spot on. This is consistent with your driving style = mostly highway miles. BMW will only change the oil under the maintenance plan when the iDrive says it is time, or if it has been 1 year since the last oil change.

If you or the dealer perform a DIY oil service between iDrive notifications do not reset the oil change iDrive. That'll throw off the computer tracked notifications. Because I'm now a low-mileage driver I often find myself doing two oil changes a year - one at the calendar click down and one in-between ... resetting iDrive on the second change.

15k mi is a lot of miles between changes. I go to a indy shop to have a oil change at 7500 mi and they know not to reset the oil change gauge in the iDrive.
