To the OP: if you’re still off the stick after adding even more, I’d suggest doing an oil change and add the specific quantity listed in the manual. If that doesn’t show on the stick you may have the wrong dipstick or the tube has come out of its spot on the engine.

Well, my ‘88 E30 325iS (M20) had it (bet yours did too), so did both of my E34s - one with M30 and the other with S38B36.
Wow, I never knew that about my '88 E30 325is and I put 666 000 kms on it over 25 yrs. In fact I don't think that I even ever saw the low oil pressure lite on (except at startups, of course). Are you sure about that? And certainly the manual never mentioned it.

If that doesn’t show on the stick you may have the wrong dipstick or the tube has come out of its spot on the engine. That would seem to be a wise course of action. I'll measure my dipstick and get back to the OP.

Yes, the E30 had it. First time it went off I was on the highway 500km from home and it did startle me. Stopped and pulled the stick and it was near the bottom of the range. Added some and it went away. See top right LED on the panel here: http://ptmaynard.com/e30sale/IMG_0955.JPG
I'll say nothing further about dipstick measuring.

You are absolutely correct. I had forgotten about the "check panel" above the rear view mirror.
My E30 was finally sent to the junk yard in 2012 with 666 000 kms on it, and I had forgotten the many features it had. The low level never came on during all of that time!
I'll say nothing further about dipstick measuring. I knew when I wrote that , that somebody might take notice of other connotations!
The dipstick measures 71.5 cm on my n62.

On page 13 it shows the low oil message that appears in the CID.

And I pride myself on reading manuals cover to cover.
It will really be interesting to find out what the situation is with the OP. Thanks for this. Salut, Bob P.
