I wouldn't know, I just look at the screen. I don't really bother to find out if there's really half left.

Anyways the new engine are known to consume oil so I am not surprise that half of the oil is gone, as I needed to topped up the engine oil 8 months into ownership as the iDrive stated that oil is below minimum and they put in around 4 litres of oil in. My car uses around 6.5 litres, you do the math.

Do a search if you don't believe me and I am sure there is threads about new engine consuming oil.
I am not sure where do you get that the new engines consume oil. I am assuming you are referring to the N52 series engines. Mine after 24,000miles doesnt consume any oil at all. If they had to put 4 litres of oil in then there is definitely something wrong with your engine.

Has anyone noticed that it's all US based people who go for early oil changes. Here in Europe we've been using extended oil change intervals for long time - up to 20,000 miles on some cars now. There doesn't seem to be any penalty associated with the long change cycles - it's always the other parts of the car that fail before the engine these days.

I think in the US you've been conditioned to believe that your engine will die young if you don't change your oil twice as often as the manufacturer (who incidentally makes money from servicing too) asks for, and who is confident enough to offer us a 3 year warranty in the UK on all BMWs.

At the prices BMW UK charge, I'll stick to their recommendations.
To each is own but this is fact: The single best thing you can do for your car's engine is change the oil.

There is no need to be defensive. At least 50% of the people in the posts you refence claim no oil consumption and the rest had to top up a quart or less in intervals of 15,000 miles or so. 15,000 miles represent 9 months to a year.

All I said was that in 8 months or so having cosumed 4 out of 6.5 liters of oil is not normal. If you think its normal, then I am perfectly fine with it. After all its your engine.

Where did you get the idea I am being defensive? I can see that you are a new member in the forum, just would like to share with you that there have been threads about engine consuming oil since you don't know where I got those information from.

Plus most of the people that put a quart in their engine only to bring it back to minimum level or they put a quart in once they saw the oil in their engine is not at maximum, it just so happen that I didn't bother to fill up when I see the engine lose some oil, I waited for the warning light to come up.

There are alot of possiblity, but the point is oil consumption in engine is not something new that surprise "old" member like me and please use the search function before posting.

Hope you would stick around to enjoy this forum though

Though don't forget that engine oil characteristics have changed and improved over recent years.

After all VHS has been superseded by DVD but some insist on still using their stock of cassettes.

Whatever works for you.

I will stick around to see your post of the blown gasket
BTW being new in a forum has nothing to do with car experience or how many BMWs I had in my life.

I just had my oil change done at Autobahn East @ Lexington, MA for $70. When my car was done, I asked the tech how the previous oil was and he said it was about as dirty as it could be.
That's good news, oil is meant to be black. It's job is to hold all the contaminents in suspension so they do not damage the engine. Black shows it is doing it's job.

The time to worry is when your oil looks clean after a few thousand miles.....or in the case of a diesel 2 miles !!
