I basically like the automatic opening of the trunk. But why did they not install a button inside the car, to open the lid. Just like in the E39.
There is a prepared spot, for a button, on the same place as in the E39.
But there are no button in my car ( 545iA with all options ).
Very inconvenient like when I let my wife off and she needs her bags in the trunk.
I the need to switch off the ignition and take the key out. Then I can open the trunk via the key button!?
Anyone knows anything about this??

I hope they can program some function via IDrive to solve this inconvenience.
My 545i is still on order so I can't confirm this yet, but according to the owner's manual on page 31, there is a trunk release button below the dash near your left knee.
Can anyone in the US confirm this?

In what month was it produced?
Our june/july version doesn't have the button - however - there seems to be some room made for it, placed similarly as in the E39.

More confusion about the button for the trunk lid.
My dealer told me it?s not available here in Europe. He also recalled that it was missing on the last model year of the E39!
Very strange and not very logical I think.
Is it only US cars that have it? Maybe it?s a random thing

Thanks to evryone who provided input to this thread. I guess the unanimous consensus is that this car is for lack of better words "truly awesome"!!!. Thsoe we some pretty funny trunk lid stories. If anyone from BMW reads this forum please take note of the fact that we all consider the trunk to be a dangerous weapon
We should all demand a recall of the trunk lids
Seriously though, BMW should comeup with some sort of hydraulic mechanism that could be easily installed by a dealer repair shop that will slow the trunk lid down. By the way, I have a trunk release button in my car which I think rolled off the production line sometime in October. On the crosswind issue, I was cruising on the New York State Thruway this weekend going about 85mph and definetely felt the car moving around in the wind a bit.
