Thats what i Was looking for! I knew someone knew how!

OK just changed the value in my lunch hour after finally figuring out how to get into the menu and unlock the code.

Why the hell could't the dealer do this rather than just adopting a patronising attitude i don't know

Thanks guys for the help on this

Isn't there an assumption here that the odometer reading is accurate? Could it be that the mpg figure is accurate and the odometer reading too high? Has anyone calibrated there odometer?

Checked it against previous car and wifes car and the differences are less than 1% on a 170 mile trip

It is now reading similar to the mpg calculated between fill ups. Will check on next refill and make any further adjustment as necessary. It is clearly better to have it reading marginally under rather than over so that the "miles left before empty" indicator is not over optimistic.

OK here's what i did. The post from Newdetour was the one i picked up on.

You need to access the "hidden menu" which is not the Idrive one but the one you can access by holding in the odometer button for a few seconds as you insert the key (i have the latest keyless fob)

You then have to scroll down to number 19 to enter the unlock code (most of the menu numbers will be blank until you unlock the menu)

The unlock code is the sum of the last 5 digits of you VIN number.

You then go to menu item 20 and adjust it to the new value

You can find all of the instructions in the attached link and it explains all of the menu options. Ignore the first bit relating to idrive, it's the last post that you need. From memory it is the same as the E39

Good luck and don't forget to lock the code again afterwards

Cracked it Thanks guys!

My OBC was showing 36.6 mpg when a manual check showed 40.9 - I've reprogrammed the constant figure from 1000 to 900 - now I just need to do another manual check to fine tune the figures!

Here are the instructions from Grogan545:
"I just went over the procedure for setting code 20 see if this step by step helps.
1-hold in reset button for about 30 seconds until some german "donkey"
talk is displayed along with 01.
2-with reset button scroll up to code 19 and wait about six seconds until screen changes and goes to code 01.
3-scroll with reset button again until you reach code 21,wait about six
seconds this puts code 19 in "unlock",display will start at 01 again.
4-scroll up to code 20(as you pass thru code 19 notice that it should say "unlock"do not stop at 19 it will scew you up)
5-when you reach code 20 wait abouit six seconds and somemore german "donkey talk comes up along with a 4 digit number(should be factory set at 1000(lower left of display).
6-push reset once and right hand digit should begin scrolling, when you reach the desired digit, push reset again this should lock that digit and the 2nd digit should start scolling.when you reach the desired digit push
reset .this should lock that digit and begin scolling the 3rd digit(this digit
only scolls from 7 thru 12).
7-when you you set this last digit you must hold the reset button for about six seconds to lock the new code.if you only briefley push reset it will start scolling the first digit again.
based on your earlier post of 4% error i would set your code to 1040.
when you are sure you have it set correctly turn off ignition this allows normal display to come up next time you start car.it is not necessary to go back to code 19 to "lock"it will automatically go to lock
