I may be a bit "dim" here, but please tell me how do you know what gear are you in at any time using the DS mode? The display shows "D", "DS" or "M1...6" in manual. Unless of course, you have a brain like a calculator and calculate it using the actual speed, the RPM and the appropriate gear ratios and do it while driving

I will check my car today. But, I think that others have provided the evidence you need to infer that your Step is behaving oddly.

In DS, you can count shifts and watch the tach (as you mention). Also, over time you will get used to how the different gears feel and sound. Finally, you switch to manual by upshiting/downshifting. Then, you would know that you were one gear lower/higher before switching. Performing this action will help you learn how the different gears feel and sound.

Use the RPM chart I provided in post #21 in this thread:

http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=22686

Since your speedometer may be reading high (100% normal) be sure to factor that in as well. Probably 2-3 MPH high at 60 and up. But you sure would not confuse the two.

3000 RPM = ~ 78 MPH in 5th gear
3000 RPM = ~ 59 MPH in 4th gear

for lower RPM

2000 RPM = ~ 52 MPH in 5th gear
2000 RPM = ~ 40 MPH in 4th gear

Please check it on your car tomorow and reply please
I checked it out under all sorts of different shift conditions this morning. My car shifts to 5th very readily regardless of the conditions. If I have accelerated rather rapidly or am at very low RPM, then I may have to coax it a little to shift to 5th by lifting off the throttle a small amount.

Here how my gearbox changes gear at minimum opening throttle
1 gear changes at 2000 rpm ?
2 gear changes at 2600 rpm
3 gear changes at 3200 rpm
4 gear changes at 3800 rpm which is close to 85 mph.
?No mather if you put cruise control on 75 or 80 it will not change gear that scares me a bit if it should be like this. But if you look from the sporty perspectiv it?s very good that you can drop the gas before a corner and get full throtle whith out any gear change. Thank you for a very good forum

Sorry for my bad English

You need to tell us whinh mode you are in but I have to assume DS from your figures above.

What u see there is:
1st to 2nd @ 2000
2nd to 3rd @ 2600
3rd to 4th @ 3200
and 4th to 5th @ 3800

So this is nearly normal for DS or D w/Sport button on. If you were NOT getting into 5th gear but staying in 4th gear you would only do 80 MPH at 4000 RPM. So you definately are getting into 5th gear. And that is where you should be. If you do your test in D only (not DS and not D "Sport") you would also shift into 6th gear. That would give you 98 MPH @ 3000 RPM or 82 @ 2500.
