Hey Z, don't get the Merc please. I have one right now, and it's a great car and all, but I just don't think it can compare to BMW. Also, any new Merc does not have a free maintanance plan anymore (05 models and up) This is another reason why I did not get another MB. I don't know if that would be a problem for you, but for a broke college student like me it's a big deal

Could you maybe wait another 10 months and pick up the new M3??? I've heard from around the block it's going to be a big V8 and massive horse power. There will be a 4 door model that is HOT in my opinion. This is the car I wanted but could not wait for.
The M3 would be a possiblility in a 4 door--except for the tranny. As mentioned, a 550i and and M3 might be a possibility. I could live with an SMG if I was the only driver. If I got this combo, then I might even keep the old Z06--modded. I'd probably get a M3 coupe. And, at least the M3 is a 400 HP V-8. It probably will have performance embarassingly close to the M5. But, the new Mustang probably will beat it. Ugh. But, oh well, it would be close and the M3 will be a much cooler car. If we don't get two BMW's, then we will miss out on one of our BWMCCA discounts. Do you get two if both are members, you have two BMW's, and you get two new BMW's? Maybe, I'll get the 550i and M3, get rid of the Z06, and act my age.

New Audi S6. It has a nice 5.2L V10 as well. Who knows? There might be an RS6 for you by then. If we judge by past efforts, the Audi cars generally do the performance/luxury balancing act better than MB and BMW. At leasts that's how the car reviewers see it. The DSG transmissions Audi has are superb.
Road and Track has a comparison this month with the new R6, the M5, and the E55. The M5 was in 3rd place, but mostly because of the SMG.

You make a great point. I saw the comparo you are talking about. The Audi might be the perfect answer if it was straight-line faster. Maybe it will get a good HP boost by the end of two more years.

Znod,

How about 650 or M6??
M6 = 2 doors. Not fast enough for the price. Has the SMG. Gets terrible mileage. Same low torque engine as M5, etc., etc. 650 = 2 doors. Also, not fast enough for the price. I'd get some AMG before the M6 for the same reasons I'd get some AMG before the M5, plus the M6 has only two doors. I'd also get some AMG before the 650.

Wooo why on earth does he need TWO turbo Cayennes? Unless one of them is the Turbo S Cayenne...

And, I spend it so wisely too--even though your really can't have too much time unless in great pain. I have a great time all the time not matter what I am doing. "Time, time, time is on my side. Time, time, time is on my hands. Oh yes it is."

Not the turbo S Cayenne yet. His wife needs a car, and he needs a rain car. Really.

Hey gang. What a fun thread. I thought it would liven things up. Keep it up. And, you have even helped me think about my serious problem. No decision yet of course, but I'm thinking more about a 550i and the M3--keeping the Z06 or not. I still have huge problems with a not state of the art tranny like the SMG. And, I might be kept from the M3 if BMW does the dumb thing with launch control it did on the M5. What the heck is BMW thinking on many dimensions? I love my 545i, but it just happened to fit my "needs" at the time. Still, I almost bought the AMG C55 because of the straight-line thing. What about when my "needs" change? Rant. Rant. Rant.

Let's hear more thoughts, options, and opinions. Let BMW know how we feel--one way are another. What do you think about BMW's performance options and attitudes (e.g., on the watered down launch control, the SMG, no good automatic for real performance, lack of straigtht-line competitiveness, low-torque/high HP engines, quasi track-cars for city slickers, and whatever else tweeks you)?
