RIP to your late father in law and enjoy the vehicle. BMW's iDrive interface is...interesting, but there are options inside that allow you to adjust the temperature justification to allow driver or passenger to either be inherently warmer or cooler depending on preferences.

As far as A/C not cooling fast enough, check the intensity setting under Climate Control -> Automatic Programs in iDrive. Mine has three settings: soft, medium and intense. I find medium works for me, but it was set to soft when I bought mine and that was definitely not intense enough.

Update -- I went out and monkeyed around with the idrive control the other night and found the place where you adjust the temperature for the driver's side. Problem fixed. I was confused because there's not a similar graphical control for temp on the passenger's side. I had already set the programs setting to highest intensity.
All -- really appreciate the warm welcome! My father in law loved BMWs, although he had a love/hate relationship with this one because of the difficulty in getting his service center to get the software load right. He was the ultimate gadget freak, so I can understand his fascination with BMWs. Wouldn't be surprised if he posted on this forum, though I wouldn't know what his handle would have been.
