In 1999, I bought a brand new E46 328i. A year later they stopped that and made it a 330i. Years ago it was 320i, 325i, then 320i, 323i, 328i, then once again 320i 325i, 330i.....you get the point. I mean they have nothing personally with you and me ( BMW customer ), they launched a product, sold as many as possible, and move on to something new.

If I remember correctly, the 6 cylinder engines were actually changed at that time. I think the 2.8 engine in the 328i was a M52 series engine but when the 330i came out it was the new M54 6 cylinder engines (same series as the ones in our cars at the moment). I suppose the engines were a different design and not just an increase in capacity at that time. Its quite similar to the move now towards the new 6 cylinder engines with Valvetronic technology which is being phased in at the moment.

why would they bother to add another model, change the badging and increase the horsepower for the 545 if it would only be for another 30 horses or so?

That's the trick. If the new larger displacement 550i is just a bored and stroked N62 versio of that in the 545i that's one thing. If it's an entirely new design then I would want to wait a year before getting one. Of course I thought I had dodged the S54 connecting rod issue too and I was wrong.

So is the new engine a N62B48 (current 545i has a N62B44) or is it something else?

Just got my Roundel magazine and speaks about the new V8 with 368 or 308hp..shoot can't remember now and the car will be called 750..no mention of the 5 series... another good article is the new package of the M3 with new wheels and crossdrilled rotors..nice...

Just to clear thing up

On the 7 Series

With the facelift in March 2005

735i changes to 740i V8
745i changes to 750i V8
760i stays the same V12

The new 4.8L that is going into the 750i is not the same one in the 4.8IS X5
The X5 one is built by Alpina ( just like the 4.6IS motor )

The 545i will change at some point in the future to become 550i
This usually takes about 6Months from one moddel getting a new engine for it to seep into the other models

So for 2006 we should expect the new 550I? I have always kicked my self in the butt by not getting a 545i but there were none avaialble in Nov2003.. so I guess my lease will be almost up then and I could place an order..can wait... but in the other hand the E90 330I looks and sounds awesome by the specifications someone got from German cars fan
