Is that in addition to the 745i? Or a replacement for the 745i?

I'm sure MB will be working on their weak V-8 engine (NOT AMG) right now after hearing this news..

I dont think there weak any more. They have got there new 3.5 V6 which im impressive. They are also going to launch a new 4.6 V8 with 360bhp and an AMG 6.3 V8 with 500bhp.

Two years after the current 3 series came out in 99, the top of the line engine went from 2.8L to 3.0L and they changed the badging instead of having an additional model. Also the 323 became the 325 but I can't remember if there was any engine changes with that because the 323 already had a 2.5 liter engine in it. So I don't think it would be unusual for them to replace the 545 engine and change the badging after 2 model years.

I don't know if the 3.5 V6 is really new -- it's performance is strikingly similar to the 3.5 V6 Mercedes is currently using the ML350 (it has 4 more HP and the torque is exactly the same). It would not surprise me if they simply "tuned" this engine for use in the E class.

Exactly.
I agree, and in my opinion the answer would be this:
It's new, ( again ), it's different ( again ), > it's called marketing. That's what sells. BMW doesn't only operate on it's own plans, but also reacts to competitors and market trends.

In 1999, I bought a brand new E46 328i. A year later they stopped that and made it a 330i. Years ago it was 320i, 325i, then 320i, 323i, 328i, then once again 320i 325i, 330i.....you get the point. I mean they have nothing personally with you and me ( BMW customer ), they launched a product, sold as many as possible, and move on to something new.

I for one, am definately not upset. If I followed BMW's marketing strategies, that would imply I'd be selling my 545i next year to get the 'facelifted version'....
550i, 30hp difference ? It will be a great car, but mate, they can keep it.

They make great dynamic performance cars that last years on end, but for me personally, my dealer is going to see me again when the 6th generation 5 series comes out...I think I should be able to survive on my 545i .
