Well, the only thing I know is that silicone compounds often seem to solve noise issues short term but come back with a vengence long term. Silicones are very difficult to contain, they go everywhere and the effect is very difficult to control.
Take for instance rejex, quite popular in the US, makes a big point about not being silicone-based.
Maybe someone else can explain more in detail.

Really? Never had a problem in the Land Rover (thats another beast I know). Are you talking about silicone spray? Like what's used to clean electrical contacts? Or some thing else?
