New Direct Injection engines: fixed for good?
Hi all,
Just recently tested a LCI 525i Touring and I found to be a valid option for my next car. However, after reading some posts here about problems on the fuel pump and injectors from owners of these engines, I would like to know if anyone can tell me that these problems have been eradicated for good (I'm planning on keeping the car after the 2 years warranty expires) ?
Regards

i have a 525 touring from 2005. noproblems so far only my friends say if I start my car it sounds like an old diesel? i dont notice it anymore after like 30 seconds i dont hear it anymore. that is theonly thing i have with this engine the only thinig i like to have is a bigger torgue. I find the feul economy quite high for this car. my e36 m3 had nearly the same economy. bigger engine but also bigger torgue so u dont have to press the gas pedal so deep to drive up a hill. and since i live in a country with quite alot of hills. Next car will be maybe a 530 diesel it will cost me (only) 400 euro extra a year in the roadtax. on the other hand i tried to drive very economically this week. outside it was around +2 degrees celcius and i drove on cruise control to maintain a speed of 100km/hr. i got an economy off 7 ltr/100km (no airco on:-) ). And for your worries well bmw is a very good car do u ever see a bmw standing next to the road? i cant remember i have seen one. a 6 cilinder car is more trustowrthy then a 4 cilinder car that is one thing for sure. i wouldnt worry about it to much u have only read a few stories that is maybe not 0.1% off al the 525 sold inthis world. and if u take care of ur car so not try to be the fastest one at the traffic light or anything other wild thing thenyou will have a nice car for the next 15 years at least. my 13 year old m3 is stil driving like new. i heard so many stories about that engine. still my m3 is the fastest in town as far as i know. i would say buy the 525 and enjoy the driving.

I have an LCI 525iA sedan - only 5000 kms sofar, but no problems. Progman was updated as a factory called action and tomorrow the injectors will be changed as a factory call as well. I think that they must be quite sure they have found out the reason for problems and fixed it because they want to change the injectors in a car without any problems.
The car is amazing and fuel consumption quite limited keeping in mind that it's a full size sedan with three litre gasoline engine. In my case below 10 litres /100 km even if my way to job is only 5 km's - meaning a lot of short trips and rush hour driving...
If you like it, just buy it, I am sure that BMW has solved the problems and that they will take care if something still exists...

My 523iA has the fifth pump and the second time a new injector. It has been two weeks in Munich and got the new improved model of the hd pump which lasted exactly ONE week and it failed again. Three days after this repair one injector that had been replaced two weeks before blew and I got stuck with five cylinders and a fully loaded car on my way to the most important exhibition of the year. Service in Munich did not help to get a replacement car but insulted me rather. I have enough, this is not the ultimate driving machine but rather the ultimate nightmare.
The problems are definitely not solved. What else can you conclude when replacement parts fail over and over again. The quality of these parts seem to be in the range of a lottery, mainly loosers.

I have been readinfg about the problems of your 523i in Motor Talk as well. It's really strange, why the pump and injectors do brake in your car. One reason might be a lot of Autobahn driving with high speed, but I think you are not the only one in Germany making that. I really hope that BMW and you can find a solution. I had a MB W203 C220CDI -08/2000 which was a nightmere. It was a different case though, because every fault was different... 35 extra visits to dealer during first 2 years -warranty period- and 50000 kms. Then I sold the car, After that only BMWs again, and no problems so far.
Please keep us informed what BMW is doing with your 523i!
Best regards from Finland where maximum speed allowed is 120 km/h in summer and 100 km/h in winter...

Unfortunately I am not the only one. My dealer has several clients that have already the second or third pump and the second set of injectors. Interestingly I am allowed to drive unlimited speed but I rarely use it to the max. Nevertheless I am going faster than 120kmh, usually around 180-200 and it is fun with a BMW, if it runs........
Best regards to Finland, send some snow and snow please......
