New car this Friday
welcome heli_ca
good luck with the new ride...a remote started can be installed if you want to go thru the trouble, i know someone who had it done, BUT, they have to take one of your keys apart and store the 'chip' under the dash somehow...it works, but then your car is can be stolen if someone really knew what they were doing
not worth it ...imho....

Really, most people in Canada use a remote car starter??? I don't know anybody that does. How do they work? If it involves leaving the key in the car, some people have had problems with that and it does not seem possible. Also, my car would get stolen if I left the key in it.
I keep the car in the garage and turn the seat heater and steering wheel heater on when I get in.

Remote starters seem to be pretty common among the under 30 set. Both my sons have remote starters on their pickups. Seems to be part of their alarm systems. One son has these remote starters on all his work vehicles as well. And here in sunny Florida it obviously is not for the cold. None of these systems require key in the ignition.

Hey thanks alot, looks like they have a few dealers here in Edmonton.? Do you have any experience with its performance?

My experience with one in a Mercedes was that it worked very well. As Iceman said, it's really better than the remote start method. No wear and tear on the engine, no security issues with an unattended, running car, etc.
As long as you have an automatic, I don't think installing a remote starter should very difficult. I'd go with either a Viper or Clifford myself.
BTW, they work around the chip in the key by simply installing a spare key, the valet key in this case, somewhere in close proximity to the ignition.
If you go somewhere like Bestbuy, the price for the top of the line or next to the top of the line remote starter/alarm should cost about $500 or so installed, but if you go to a highend shop, expect to pay at least a $1000 on install alone.
