I gave my dad's XJR a jump start last weekend. This resulted in a lighting system fault. No signals or anything. The car may have fixed itself after going into its 7th stage of sleep, but I wasn't sure so I went to the dealer on Saturday.
He disconnected the battery and the fault was gone. He then had to reinitialize the AS. he said that the surge back to the E60 after the receving car stops cranking will always cause problems.
Solution: If you must jump start a car, run your car for a few minutes to get the battery fully charged, then turn it off and let them start off you battery.

To tell you the truth I'm so anal that I wont jump start anyones car with my car... I dont like that extra stress on my cars electrical components... Does it actually do any harm? I dont know but I dont care...
Ya even if its to jump start one of my other cars or my parents cars... I'll call AAA or use my portable jump start pack.
Oh and if you run into me in a parking lot or street and need a jump start... sorry... I'll call AAA for you.

Yes, it did happen to me :'(
The car's electronic brain does not like fluctuating voltage just like your computer.
Bottom line: DON'T JUMPSTART YOUR E60 WITH DONOR CAR TURNED ON, OR JUMP OTHER CARS WITH YOUR E60'S KEY BEYOND POSITION I.
