My new 06' 525, yes its my first Bimmer, makes a strange noise when you open the door. Sounds like a faint electric motor that runs for about 2 sec. Any idea what this is? Its very strange to me! Just curious.

Yes it is normal.
Even little VW Jetta (Bora) with 1.6 liter engine does it.
I have figured out that only gas engine cars do this.
Never heard a diesel car do this. Therefore I assume it could be something with the catalizator (exhaust emission filter... ) or the sparks-electrics for the start since that is the major difference between diesel and gas engine

The noise you hear on the diesel is the engine pre-heat priming itself for start up. In older diesels you had to wait for the little glow plug light on the dash to go out before starting the engine. BMW's system overcomes this as they use the time it takes you to unlock the car, open the door and put your seat belt on to have the engine ready for instant start up.
The petrol noise is probably the fuel pump priming itself.

Agree with the above - although the other noise you can get is the electric seats positioning themselves based on the key memory...
