I have always thought my car sounded very nice - almost exotic. Yesterday, at a four-way stop sign, an E46 M3 convertible pulled away from the stop sign just before I did and ran the revs up quite a bit. I pulled away just seconds after it did - making a point to accelerate similarly, and the sound was -identical-. Pretty cool that BMW would tune a non-M car like mine to sound just as good. Just thought I'd share.
One thing for sure is that BMW is very good at making their 6 & 8 cylinder engines & exhaust notes sound very good. (nice & deep especiaIIy at idle & low revs)!
I have 2 friends that own C & E class Mercs that admit that in comparison their cars sound like tractors.
