Surely a manual is going to be better on fuel than an auto? My auto revs quite a bit before it changes gear. I reckon with all the torque my engine has, I could change the gears much sooner resulting in lower revs and less fuel used.

Once you get more miles in the car, you will be able to control the shifts with the gas paddle.
Maybe a remap for some more torques? i am close to 600newton. And once i had 640 out of it because of a bad remap, my 530d was pushing out over 290HPs. not a good idea if you want to keep it in 1 piece
The problem with the auto is the torque converter. On takeoff there is no solid connection between the engine and the box, so your doing more RPM's then the gearbox. Its called "Slip"
This is needed else you wouldn't be able to stand still with the engine running.
At the higher gears and when driving at a steady speed, the Lock-up function will activate. It locks the 2 turbines of the torque converter together so there is no slip.
I am doing about 40mpg at cruise speed too.

I am no stats geek, but I think the 545i does pretty well with regards to torque and has the added bonus of the additional hp...
I am just curious, so dont kill me for asking, but is mpg's really that important? If it is wouldnt you have purchased a Prius or something "green"?? Its a BMW and its meant to be driven... and I mean driven! Why so much effort to keep the rpm's down at a certain level blah blah blah...

Well, at 11.77 dollars per gallon (Imperial gallons) for gasoline, you'd be keeping the rpm's down on your v8's too. 212 bucks for a full tank of guzzaline anyone?
Diesel is even more expensive....

calculated to US prices, in HOlland gasonline is 7.80 usd per gallon and diesel is 5.90 usd per gallon.
Road taxes for diesels are double the amount of a gasonline e60 though so you need to drive alot of miles a year to make it profitable.

Getting more MPG's is not necessarily about the money. For me, it's a good way of assessing the condition of your engine (generally less MPG's relate to engine wear and possible problems), a bit of a challenge to try and improve it and it's always a good conversation point

Those numbers in german site are pretty good. My record is 6,2 l/100km or around. Usually closer 10 l. So, average is closer over 8.I had earlier two 503d's without dpf, I my feeling is that those were much better in economy. Also, all those who have remapped their cars, usually run their cars lower. Mine is 100% standard.
