Dont think you have RDS services in the US. The Radio shown is the Pro Radio with dual tuners and MP3 via the single CD player in the dash

You have business nav, so you have radio pro. Therefore you have MP3 playback!

Hi def radio is a new concept being intoduced by BMW

You can read a bit about it here http://www.autointell-news.com/News-2005/A.../A-10-05-p4.htm

Hi-Def radio is not a new concept & it is was not introduced by BMW. Kenwood has had this for 3 years & I was using it back then. BMW may be the first to introduce this as a option on their cars.

Hi-def radio is actually very cool, essentially its like satellite radio in the sense the sound is crystal clear, CD like, but now its coming from your local radio station. Just like regular HDTV the station has to broadcast in HD in order to receive it.

The funny thing is I don't see how this is possible to attain with just a software upgrade, there is hardware that is also needed. You need to have an HD tuner(just like HDTV) unless BMW has been building the cars with HD tuners but I doubt it cause we would have had this before. With my Kenwood setup I got a seperate HD Tuner that the radio antenna went into then out from it to the head unit. I am very interested to see how this will be updated in our cars.

Peace

The problem with HD radio (as I see it) is that it's stuck in the old programming paradigm. The whole reason XM and Sirius are popular in the states is because it doesn't mirror the garbage that we get on the regular airwaves. I'm not especially interested in the same crap - with the only improvement being that it's better-sounding.

FWIW, several stations in my area are now brodcasting in HD.
Hopefully my next car will have it (I still have a year and a half with my trusty 545).

Question:
I have a Feb 04 545 w/nav & changer. Does this mean that with a software update from the dealer that I will be able to, once released, play mp3 audio? I haven't really kept up with the idea of playing mp3's. But, when I saw the post I got all big eyed and bushy tailed.

Quick Reply: Is MP3 play available with CIP v. 18?
