The steptronic has adaptive transmission control, but the driver-type adaptation is restarted each time the vehicle pulls away from a standstill. Unlike some cars, it appears the E60 doesn't learn/retain driver type over a long period of time. More info about E60 steptronic here:

Thanks stream:

I have seen the PDF. In my original post, I was speculating on ECU learning versus Step learning. As indicated, I have never heard that 545i's allow ECU learning as, for example, my Z06 does. In this regard, I have never completely understood why my test times started out slowish and improved until very fast. As indicated, I am afraid that the problem is that I can't completely turn DSC and DTS off. But, there are other possibilities that I mentioned originally that would be equally bad. More than anything else my car acts like I am not able to fully defeat DSC and DTS; like those features are robbing HP even though supposedly off.

How about pulling the battery cable for 20 minutes and starting the whole reset thing over again? These cars always seem to be at their best prior to learning IMHO (hoping yours just has bad memory).

Thanks for the suggestion doug. I have never tried to do a reset on a BMW. So, I am not sure what might go wrong if I try what you suggest. Do you have any thoughts on the bads that might happen? Is pulling a battery cable the standard way of starting learning on, for example, a 545i?

Not sure what ALL of the bad things might be, but I do remember reading in the manual that the windows and sunroof must be re-synched.

Hi Znod
Been away for a couple of days.Sorry to hear your times have increased since updating to 20.01.It very well could be due to the relearning process.I never ran any times soon after a software update, but I do sort of remeber the shifts being slower & funkier for a few days after an update.Mine is going in on monday for an update to 20.01,I'll make some runs soon after and report the findings.

I agree with you that .4 sec is a very significant diff in 0-60 times. You definitely can feel the difference.
Hi grogan:

Yes, I can feel the difference very well. I hope it is relearning. Wow, you are very brave to do 20.01.00 given my experience. Why are you doing the update?

OK - I am always willing to add a conspiracy theory - and here it is:

BMW does not want the 545's as fast as the 550's - so they slowed your car down on purpose - but will never tell

GOdd luck and I hope it jsut takes time to learn to get you back where you were

Hi Znod

Car is going in for a couple of minor problems(rear speaker barking, poor AM reception).I thought I read somewhere in this forum that 19.01 corrects the AM reception problem,I presently have 17.03.The dealer usually updates to the latest revision so I assume I'll get 20.01.Now I'm not sure if I'll let them proceed.I will not give up .4 sec for better AM reception.I am hoping your problem go's away after a few days.Let me know by this sunday night if you are back to normal.

The only time I experienced sluggish performance like yours was at the drag strip.I also could not spin the tires,I didn't mention my 0-60 time during that run previously but it was a very poor 5.65 sec. However I am sure my sluggish performance was due to the weather.
