"We're talking V8's here!" What do you mean?
That there is a big differance between sixinlines and V8's.
A good question could be, is the same CIP good for all engines?
I see. But, surely all code in an update does not apply to all cars--i.e., some would apply to 8's, some t0 6's, etc.

My Dinan CAI install is scheduled for Tuesday. But, if my car doesn't start learning soon, then I see no reason to follow through on the install. Why mod a slow car? But, of course, my car starts learning, a fix comes out, or I am allowed to go back to 19.01.01, then I can always have the CAI installed later.
Hey Znod,
I would still install the CAI even if your car doesn't improve. I know you've been getting close to 5.0 times but 5.5 is still not slow, especially when BMW claims 5.6. Installing the CAI will improve the performance regardless of where you started...IMO.

As for going back to an older version, I don't see why not since you can downgrade software just like you can upgrade software. At least I've seen that done in the software industry.

Anyway, hope your car "improves" over time. Your 0-60 times have been very encouraging and I'd like to see you break below 5.0.

.4 is a very big difference. That's at least 2 car lengths in the 1/4. So if your findings are indeed real, BMW needs to go back to the drawing board!

Are you planning on doing additional tests? Was the weather exactly like it was when you got the better times (including humidity)?

I would go ahead with the install.

I'm pretty sure the difference in time between the CIP software versions is really due to the Steptronic have to "relearn" your driving habits due to new 20.01.00.

Hmm... seems like a pretty good opportunity to find a long open stretch of road and flooring it several hundred times to make sure the car "relearns" your driving characteristics ...

Good luck and keep us posted.

Right, but the two questions I raised above are: (1) Would BMW let me? and (2) Do they retain older versions when they get new ones?

I am pretty sure I would have broken 5 with the CAI if it is half what it is cracked up to be.

Hi again ipse d:

I hope you are right about the Step. I am afraid the problem may be that I am unable to turn both DSC and DTC off--which makes a huge difference. Yes, I might do the road thing. I definitely will do more testing. Also, it is possible that the right fuel map is not being loaded for DS and full throttle. Thanks for the optimism.

I speculated that my improved results were the result of computer adaptation to driving style, but have never been able to confirm that the 5-Series computers learn in this way--as does my Z06. I quess my current situation will provide an opportunity to gain evidence on whether the 545i computer does learn driving style.
The steptronic has adaptive transmission control, but the driver-type adaptation is restarted each time the vehicle pulls away from a standstill. Unlike some cars, it appears the E60 doesn't learn/retain driver type over a long period of time. More info about E60 steptronic here:

Everything was very comparable tw. I am going to be doing more tests over the next several days at least--as a prelude to finally deciding whether or not to do the CAI now or to put it off. I don't want to confound the issues.

Hi Znod
Been away for a couple of days.Sorry to hear your times have increased since updating to 20.01.It very well could be due to the relearning process.I never ran any times soon after a software update, but I do sort of remeber the shifts being slower & funkier for a few days after an update.Mine is going in on monday for an update to 20.01,I'll make some runs soon after and report the findings.

I agree with you that .4 sec is a very significant diff in 0-60 times. You definitely can feel the difference.
