On my 2004 525i

1. When the key is at ON but before engine crank, the Service Engine Soon light is on. It will go off as soon as the engine starts cranking. Is this normal?

2. There is no battery indicator on the dashboard? How do I know the alternator is charging properly or battery is dying?

3. When I mute the audio, does the audio system turns off, or the radio or CD player is spinning but just that the audio is muted? Anyway to turn the audio system truly dormant?

4. There are like speakers at the center of the interior roof, but I don't really hear any audio from there, nor it seems to be the AC. What are they?

5. Any recommendation of a repair manual for simple maintanence (oil change, alternator replacement, coolant change etc.) and understand the car better?

6. Cup holder - do you use any aftermarket cup holder? There isn't any place within reach of the driver in this car where you can keep your drink (well, the factory cup holder is just so in your face that I hate to pup it out).

Thanks!

1. Yes, as long as it doesn't stay on. It is just going thru the normal checks
2. The car will warn you of high drain, if the situation arises.
3. IIRC, pressing the mute will pause the CD... and muting the radio is as good as shutting it off (dormant)
4. IIRC, that is the motion sensor for the alarm
5. ?, my dealer takes care of that stuff
6. No, but what I do if I have a large oversized cup, I will keep the rear center armrest down and use the cup holders from there. It's a little reach, but holds bigger drinks

5. Alternator replacement is "simple maintenance"?
6. A large coke washes down the triple cheesburger on the passenger seat!
