My uncle works for BMW and admits the 124 is one of the best designs but has some of the poorest engineering when it comes to the alloy its made with. These things bend way too easily. Some things bother me about quality. Take for instance the vacuum lines for the cracked/corroded turbo that cost $900 to replace. These hoses are right near the wastegates/exhaust and are open and exposed, no coating, no steel braided covering, nothing. $60K car and BMW couldn't afford to put steel braided hoses in the car? That to me sounds a bit neglectful. The N54 twin turbo cars are a whole other story.

I've owned turbo cars in the past, NONE gave this many issues inside of the first 60K, hell none of them gave these kinds of issues inside the first 80K. The fact that its a luxury car and a BMW should not excuse it from some bad build traits, not all, some. I still believe it is the ult ultimate driving machine.

As I said in my first post, I LOVE this car, and I will get it all resolved, but some of the problems myself and others are dealing with, BMW should've sorted out or put out a recall campaign for.

I feel your pain brother... mines has 52,000 miles and has some issues, in the past I had Honda, Niissan, Toyota all lasted well over 100k with no issues.... On the other hand, This is my 2nd E60 and before I made this purchase I did look at these Japanese Brands but, in the end nothing compares to the BMW brand and design. I'm already thinking on my next BMW either a X6 or a F10 M package

Joe, I need your mechanic.. Lol. Actually it's good to network people to find some good deals and indi shops out there. I just did my work. Here are the parts I did @ 100k miles:

Found an indi Certified BMW mechanic that is hooking up all this for very cheap with some trading involved. It's going to take 2 trips to finish the job. I already paid for all the parts below. I'm not paying over $3000 to do all this labor @ a stealership. All parts are OEM. ZF and INA are original parts on the BMW

24-11-7-571-217 OIL PAN W (1) -- $133.97 ZF <--- very time consuming if you do not have access to a lift.

24-11-7-552-108 TORX SCRE (24) --$43.44 (recommended to change screws if your replacing the oil pan)

24-34-7-588-725 SEALING SLEEVE (1) --$13.66 <--- very time consuming if you do not have access to a lift.

83-22-2-220-445 Transmission Fluid 1375.4 (6 liters) --$162

11-42-7-525-335 Oil filter GASKET:11 (1) --$9.06

11-42-7-537-293 Oil filter GASKET:11 (1) --$9.06

11-53-7-549-476 Thermostat + the screws (1) -- $77.15 INA

11-28-7-530-314 Mechanical Belt Tension (1) -- $77.93

11-28-7-628-650 Belt (1) -- $28.77

BMW Coolant (2 Gallons) -- $37.12

SAF-XO (2 liters) -- $40.00

spark plugs FR7NPP332 Bosch (6) -- $58.25

No LABOR, I bought all the parts online (CTSC, AutohausAZ, RMEuropean, etc...). I found a local indy shop that I can trust and specialized on euro cars. The mechanic owns a 740i so I know he's familiar with the 4.4 L V8.

BTW, I forgot to mention that the water pump install and AC/alternator belts replacement were included.
He quoted me for $600 at first, but then I added more job so we ended with $700 (plus a good tip). Must be the recession.

I "heard" that the water pumps on bmw's rarely if ever go out, according to one BMW mechanic who says he hardly ever works on them. He says the thermostats go out more then anything since it's made of plastic.
