Signal/data from MAF is used for many things, including air/fuel ratio. Improper air/fuel mix can screw up lot of things (over a period of time) including catalytic converters.
If it's my car, I'd buy OEM (Bosch) MAF.

how can i tell if a MAF is bad? my cars been *coughing* lately, and little bad in idling, i tried cleaning the mad and didnt seem to do much, just curious before i shell out the money on the MAF if that could be the issle. any way to test??
Ok guys, thanks. Well mine is a diesel so... converters wont be needed
roskinc - there is a way to tell if its bad or not, just unplug the MAF and drive a little, if it is smoother and runs better, MAF is shot...
EDIT: Oh, also, how about ebay Bosch MAF, will it do?
