Signal/data from MAF is used for many things, including air/fuel ratio. Improper air/fuel mix can screw up lot of things (over a period of time) including catalytic converters.

If it's my car, I'd buy OEM (Bosch) MAF.

Ok guys, thanks. Well mine is a diesel so... converters wont be needed

roskinc - there is a way to tell if its bad or not, just unplug the MAF and drive a little, if it is smoother and runs better, MAF is shot...

EDIT: Oh, also, how about ebay Bosch MAF, will it do?
