But does the HUD utilize the nav when you're just tracking your position (as opposed to actually navigating somewhere)?

When I saw HUD on a 545i last year, all I got was a digital speedo. Hardly seemed worth it considering all the other extra cost goodes available.

I wouldn"t be without it.? It's very accurate everywhere I've been in the northeast.? Also, I have a early-2004 disc and I find no need to update.

One last thing - adding HUD brings nav to a whole different level.

I use Sat Nav even when I'm driving to known places as the TMC updates the route to take into account the latest traffic conditions. Saved me 30 minutes the other day taking me the back way out of a city rather than along the freeway which was all snarled up. WONDERFUL gadget !

When you have HUD it brings up the split screen for nav instructions, cruise control speed, traveling speed, check control messages and FTM.IMO HUD is one of the best options to have ,once you turn it on you never turn it off its that good. Well worth the money it cost.
cheers

There have been threads that discuss the relative speed of the interface - nav vs. non-nav.

I don't think this is accurate. The haptics of the iDrive system are an integral and key part of it. There can be no haptics without "force feedback". If you can offer some evidence to support your claim I would be happy to take a look, but this simply sounds false.

Yes, but what does HUD provide when Nav has no route in place?

In that situation then the HUD provides digital read out of speed, check control messages and cruise control information - be it standard cruise or adaptive. But I use nav all the time !

It's very accurate! Good idea to keep disc updated as errors are corrected and street closes, get "one way" etc. Dics also includes "places of interest", which constantly changes.

I could really do with having the nearest Starbucks on the information screens - though the brand opf petrol station is very useful also.
