It's quite true, especially in mainland China. Anytime I'm up there, I see people driving E38 728i's, Audi A6 1.8s and Benz S280s. I really don't understand how they can drive such a car. I'd opt for a "lower class" E39 540i over an underpowered barge of a 728i anyday at the equivalent price.
They buy the car because of the badge...

1 more thing is why in the name would bm make a Long Wheelbase E60 when there is the 7Ls around in HK and China.
Wast of time and money if you ask me  .
If I would buy a Long Wheelbase car then I go for the 7L and put a 32 LCD, a Xbox360, PS3 when it out, Blue ray player and HDDVD player in the back and let some 1 drive it.

I found this point amusing. Honestly, if you put together a list of long-legged peoples who might need an extended length E60, the Chinese would not be anywhere near the top of that list.

They can't really drive fast since traffic congestion is horrible in major cities, and there are too many bicycles and motorcycles on the road. In rural highways there are also too many slow moving vehicles (or home made farm tractor like vehicles) that you can't really go faster then 80 km/H. Even in modern toll ways most vehicles do not go faster than 100km/H. There is really no point to own a fast car.
But are you sure about the highways? Have you been to China recently? Last week I was going to Sheung Ping and the driver took the highway that goes from SZ to GD and people there travel in excess of 100 km/h. I think as the quailty of the highways improve, speed will go faster and faster.

My Ride: 2004 530i Titanium Silver Metallic w/ gray leather
Premium Package, Cold Weather Package, navigation, iPod retrofit
I'm in southeast China on business for the next month or so. I see more 7 series than any other kind of BMW. There are 750s everywhere. There are no 3 series to be found.
I was out for some dinner last night in Haining, and I saw my first 530Li. I had never even heard of a long wheelbase 5er. It looked cool- same color as mine but longer. The funny thing is a little short guy got out of the back seat.
I say it's funny because I'm 1.90m tall and 110kg with a shaved head. Everybody here stares at me like I'm the big white devil.

I'm at the moment in Nanning, China, about 500km west from Macao. Here I can see mostly E60s, some e46, e90, e38, e65, one Z3, one e39. What I wonder is that in here variety of cars is huge, compared to Shanghai or Beijing.
Long wheel base model was made specially for China because even VW Passat have one. So have all other premium brands. MB C or E I don't know.
Falterkammer, where are You? Maybe we could meet?
