IMHO, the L7 sounds a lot richer and cleaner compared to any aftermarket system.
I was just responding to what you said....

? I could spend the amount of money that the Logic 7 costs and build a system that is a significant improvement in quality of sound.
subterFUSE,

If that is truly the case, why did you option the Logic 7 in your 545 instead of installing a "superior" after-market system for the same amount of money?

I thought the standard fit sound system in my 2004 Volvo S60R (which I keep in Vancouver) sounded much better overall than the L7 system I have in my Singapore car. The S60R has real subwoofers that you can feel and hear inside the car!

Interesting article on the topic of OEM systems and the degree to which they suck:

Look at the very next sentence I wrote after the one you mentioned... you'll get your answer. The E60 does not allow easy alterations to the audio system. New cars today have too much electronic integration and stuff.

On the subject of aftermarket audio quality.... let's consider this. My first aftermarket stereo system years ago cost me about $3700 for everything, including an alarm system.... and it blew the Logic 7 away.

It included:

Eclipse CD headunit
Boston Acoustics 5.25" component speakers in front
Boston Acoustics 6.5" coax speakers in rear
One 12" Rockford Fosgate subwoofer in a sealed enclosure
2 Rockford Fosgate amplifiers
Alpine alarm system

Take off the alarm, and that system would have been closer to $3000.
It was a simple setup, but used good quality components and sounded excellent.

The systems in my cars after that one were much more involved.... but also much more expensive. But the point I was making was.... I've done a basic system for $3000 and it sounded fantastic.... and certainly better than the Logic 7 I have now.

IMHO . . .
If you're listening to Satellite Radio, MP3 files, FM Radio, or CDs the Logic7 is a fine system. If you're a true audiophile, you wouldn't be listening to any of those source inputs for your music. You'd limit Sirius to talk radio and baseball, abhor MP3, use FM to check in on the local traffic, and find a better headend than a legacy CD player. After you've installed a SACD or DVD-A or whatever, you'd start worrying about the 'other end' of the system.

Of course, if I was really an audio purest, I'd never listen to music outside of my accoustically perfect media room. And by the way, I don't have such a room as streaming 128 bit MP3s are good enough for my old ears.

I mean no offense to those who take their music reproduction and signal processing seriously. I do mean to suggest that beauty is in the ear of the listener.

That's the ticket!

There will always be people who are happy with the factory system and there will always be people who aren't...

Another fact about the L7 i like is that the subwoofers are hidden under the driver and passenger seats. There are no 'ugly' boxes, amps or speakers visible in the trunk of the car. I think the fact that BMW is a major trend setter in high end technology, they certainly did a great job with this system. Of course its not compared to a $10,000 system but hey for a stock system it ROCKS!!
