It is more important to confirm that pressing your E60 key-lock function is working than the unlock function. Logic being that if it failed to unlock, you are probably moving toward the car and can hear or see the double confirmation very quickly if the key press failed. Now, reverse the scenario for the lock function. You are walking away from the car, less likely to be looking at the visual, and increasing the difficulty of hearing the single audible with every step. All of the above depends somewhat on how the iDrive is programmed.

Looks to me like the logic for one flash/audible versus two flashes/audibles is reversed. It is more important to have confirmation that your vehicle is locked when leaving it unattended than it is to have confirmation that it is unlocked a moment before you will be testing the door manually. So, if I were a BMW engineer/designer, I would have the double flash/audible confirmation for locking, not unlocking.

If that is an example of German engineering, how did they manage to do the rest of the car so well?

While we're in a knit-picking mood, let me pick some too:

Things that I wish BMW would change: (My own selfish thoughts only)

1. Make a cover for that small velour-lined tray in the driver's door. It would make a nice coin tray.

2. Move the open-trunk button to a place where we can reach without performing yoga.

3. Move the CD-changer to a place where we can reach without performing yoga too.

4. Extend/re-plane/re-shape the arm rest on the doors so my arm would not slide off. Oh, It's hard to coast your elbow while driving with your left hands only.

5. The gap left open when you exted the leg support piece (on the bottom cushion) should be covered. It always gets dirt in that gap.

6. Gear indicator should be incorporated into HUD

7. What JDN said

And now we're driving without both hands on the weel, are we?

And why, BMW, can't I fit a Chesterfield chair in lieu of the driver's seat?

Though I see logic in what JDN is saying, I'm guessing part of the logic for two flashes may be that in the dark when looking for the car in a huge parking lot, two flashes and beeps give you more "search" time to find your car.

And let me add my gripes. I wish the trunk keyhole was not visible as I don't remember ever using it! (I only want holes that I use!)
